Lewis Clarke who has been training at BS7 Gym for his mammoth trip to ski across the South Pole will soon depart the UK and everyone from BS7 gym would like to say good luck and stay safe! The most astonishing aspect of Lewis' trip is that he will become the youngest person to ever complete the feat at 16 years old.
Lewis who lives in the Bishopston area and is raising money for The Prince's Trust charity. Lewis previously become one of the youngest individuals to swim the English Channel, but now he will face the arctic conditions of the South Pole instead of the waves of the English Channel.
Gary cox, BS7 Gym manager has assisted Lewis in his training and provided Lewis with essential training which will help him complete the 50 to 60 day expedition. Lewis will cover a distance of over 730 miles on skis, pulling all his own supplies whilst receiving 3 re-supplies during the trek.
Commenting on training Lewis, Gary said "As training progressed Lewis worked through cycles of muscular endurance and strength training. The general idea is to be strong to help prevent injury and reduce the daily demands of the expedition. This along with the muscular endurance training means Lewis can perform for longer at the relatively lower levels of exertion that will sustain him day by day and be able to call upon higher strength when required"
Lewis will first fly to Punta Arenas in Chile and will then fly on to Union Glacier Base, Antarctica a week later, around the 23rd November. He will join an Adventure Networks International expedition from Hercules Inlet on the coast to the South Pole, guided by experienced polar guide, Carl Alvey.
Good luck from the BS7 team!
